Pretty Smart Plants

My front flower bed is almost completely shaded on the north side of my house. I have more flowers in there this year than I have before.  As I was watering the other day, I noticed that many of them are leaning out as far as they can to get as close to the light as they can.

The fact that the plants will move towards the light is absolutely amazing to me and I realized that my little plants were trying to teach me a lesson.  Most of those plants in that flower bed are permanently bent toward that light. They spend the entire day reaching for the sun.

I started to wonder what I would look like if I constantly kept my focus on the light. What would I look like if I always focused on the good and always recognized my blessings?  And then, of course, my mind went to what I would look like if I spent all. day. long. reaching as far as I could to get closer to THE Son.

Not so ironically as I was doing some reading this morning I came across some words of wisdom from Dallin H. Oaks. He referred to the scripture in Matthew 6:22.

"The light of the body is the eye:
if therefore thine eye be single,
thy whole body shall be full of light."

He said, "In His sermon to multitudes... the Savior taught that mortal bodies can be full of light or full of darkness. We, of course, want to be filled with light, and our Savior taught us how we can make this happen. We should listen to messages about the truths of eternity. He used the example of our eye, through which we take light into our bodies. If our 'eye be single'—in other words, if we are concentrating on receiving eternal light and understanding—He explained, 'thy whole body shall be full of light'".

There is a lot of dark in the world. Sometimes we spend long periods of time in the shade so to speak. Things look bleak. It is dark. But WOW we can learn something from those intelligent little flowers. We can still reach... AND STILL GROW!   Maybe even grow a little taller because we had to reach a little farther and work a little harder.  I hope I can learn from my intelligent little flowers.

Sunny Sunflowers

Josh and I teach a group of 7-8 year old boys.    At our last activity, we learned about helpful and unhelpful thoughts.    We called helpful thoughts sunny sunflowers and unhelpful thoughts worry weeds.    When unhelpful thoughts like, “I can’t do it” or “I’m stupid” or “Nobody likes me” enter your mind, pull them and plant sunny sunflowers!    A few of my favorite sunny sunflower thoughts are: “I can do anything I put my mind to”, “I am enough”, “All of my problems have solutions”, “ I am perfect just the way I am”.     We planted sunflowers and strawberries in little pots and had pudding dirt cups with Oreos and worms for dessert.    It was a lot of fun and such a good lesson to learn!    Remember you are loved!    You can get through anything, and when things do get hard, ask for help!  😊   “The only tyrant I accept in this world is the ‘still small voice’within.”-Gandhi -S...

"I Can't Dad"

A few years ago we took the family on a backpacking adventure. Little did I know that an experience at the end of the trip with my 9 yr old daughter would, years later, teach me a profound lesson about the love that my Savior has for me.  I think it was a little too much too soon for Ella, because she no longer wants to backpack with her mom, brother and I. We had planned a two night, three day backpacking trip to one of my favorite places in southern Utah. My good friend, his family, as well as my sister in law and her husband were planning to make the trip.  When I was in college I took a class called Literature of the Outdoors. At the end of the semester I was able to go along with a small group of classmates and my instructor on a two night backpacking trip to Coyote Gulch. It was a life changing experience. I have always loved nature and spending time outdoors but this trip was different. We walked for miles in the bottom of a narrow canyon with towe...

Loss and Love

I know this blog is to share joy but a little heavier topic has been on my mind and I would like to share my thoughts...it ends with immense joy though, so stick with me!  I have been contemplating loss lately, the kind of deep loss that throws your life headfirst back into perspective. An eternal perspective. Maybe the loss of a loved one, loss of a friendship, loss of expectations you had for your life, these kinds of losses. Natural questions come up when these type of difficult things happen such as what's the purpose? What's the point of everything I'm doing here? It's amazing how shockingly fast your life can be thrown into pondering these questions. I have had these experiences and I'm sure you have too. During one of these times in my life I learned a great truth. I have always known that I have a Father in Heaven who loves me. I have never doubted this but during this difficult time I had many tender mercies given to me to show just how much He ...
